Top 5 tracks of ‘08

As I started with numbers 10-6, here are my top five favourites of the past year.

5. Michelle Williams- “We Break The Dawn”

I already went into my deep love for this track last month. But this Solange penned track really is all sorts of amazing. It’s a house track that isn’t too heavy, and its about going out, which is a nice change of pace compared to usual house fare of songs called “Higher.” But in all seriousness, this should of been a hit, but as far as I’m concerned, this song is what the DJs play at the studio 54 in heaven.

4. Katy Perry- “Hot n’ Cold”

So many haters don’t like this song, and I have no idea why. It is pure disco 2008 Dr. Luke sonic pop perfection. While the rest of her record leaves much to be desired in terms of Ms. Perry, this is really Dr. Luke’s song anyway. The chorus, the beat, everything is just so 2008 and by those standards, perfect. It is his best work since Paris Hilton’s “Nothing In This World.”

3. Britney Spears- “Trouble”

Why this track was left off the album is far beyond me. This Bloodshy & Avant/Clutch masterpiece is about fucking CHASITY! of all things. Now when was the last time you heard a good song about that by someone over the age of 25?? NEVER. And best of all, Britney gives a shout out to B&A proudced “Do Somethin’,”. Genius, you can’t even say it isn’t one of Britney’s finest momenets ever. And it amazes me that the above pic is less than a year old…Britney really has cemented her status as a true gay icon for ever. Liza with a what…?

2. Duffy- “Warwick Avenue”

When I met Duffy this year at a show, I told her that her and producer EG White were musically soulmates. This track is both of their best works. The track has enough to make even me stop dead in my tracks. Her voice and his instrumentation rival Mutya on her best day. I can’t believe that “Mercy” is her only hit here, cos that song is a bit of whatever…

1. Mariah Carey- “I’m That Chick”

Susprise, susprise. This should be a shock to no one, considering I gushed over it a while back. While for the first time, her singles from an album did not get the big “house make-over” that she is known for, MC made what I believe to be is her first real balls-to-the-wall house track, thanks to Stargate. Too bad the album tanked, even though this was intended to be a single. And really, being “like that uptown haze them real thugs blaze” is something we should all strive to be, as I know I did, in 2008.
